Convention Center Hotel, Huntington Tunnel, Malls B & C
Cuyahoga County | Cleveland , Ohio
Convention Center Foundation Study | Osborn Engineering performed an evaluation/investigation of the existing below grade walls and mat foundation system (with undermat drainage) to determine whether or not the foundations could be reused to support a future renovation that would utilize larger column bay spacings with an overall reduction in the weight of the building. Alternative schemes included using bonded reinforced spread footings on the mat, as well as caissons penetrating through the mat down to bedrock.
Hilton Hotel Engineering Services | Osborn Engineering provided civil/site engineering and fire protection design services for the new Hilton Hotel in Downtown Cleveland. The civil design encompassed the extension of utility services from the available mains to the structure, grading around the building perimeter, and close coordination with the project team to insure a cohesive design that meets the projects needs, time frame and budget. The fire protection design addressed the necessary fire pumps and sprinkler system for the requisite review and approval by the permitting authorities. This two-acre property on the corner of Ontario Street and Lakeside Avenue was the former site of the Cuyahoga County Administration Building. The new Hilton operated hotel consists of 602 guest rooms and 33 floors towering 374 feet above Lakeside Avenue. The recently completed Medical Mart and Convention Center abuts the site to the south and east. A below-grade pedestrian way will provide direct access to the Convention Center. This new $260M structure, with tight project constraints and a fast-track schedule, opened in February of 2016 in time for the Republican National Convention.
Malls | Osborn was the Civil Engineer of Record for this historic redevelopment of the Downtown Cleveland Malls as part of the new Medical Mart and Convention Center. Civil design required careful coordination with all of the building design disciplines, as the reconstructed Malls B & C serve as the green roofs over the main exhibition space, convention meeting rooms and the main ballroom. Reconstruction of the underground Convention Center Exhibit Hall required the complete replacement and upgrade of the utilities and roadway infrastructure over the nearly two city blocks site area. Osborn’s Civil Engineering design included routing new utility services for domestic water, fire water, storm, sanitary, gas, steam, electric and phone/data, as well as several utility main relocations on St. Clair Ave. and Lakeside Ave. New roadways included East Mall Drive, West Mall Drive, the East and West Promenades and a redesigned W. 3rd St. Entrance and truck ramp.
Hotel Tunnel Design | Additionally, Osborn completed full engineering construction documents to create a below-grade tunnel connection between the Hotel and the Huntington Park garage. This project started with a full assessment of the garage to identify the most cosst-effective connection location as well as the existing conditions at the connection location.
