MED-252-03.95 Bridge Replacement

Ohio Department of Transportation, District 3 | Medina County , Ohio
This project called for replacement of the existing bridge carrying SR-252 over the West branch of the Rocky River. The bridge, MED-252-3.95, is a 3-span steel beam bridge with bridge limit of 172-feet and a width of 32-feet face/face of guardrail. The bridge carries one lane of mainline SR-252 traffic in each direction. The project encompassed complete replacement of the existing bridge with a new steel beam bridge with composite reinforced concrete deck. The project involved design and construction of new concrete semi-integral abutments and piers founded on deep foundations, new elastomeric bearings, concrete parapet, and full-width approach slabs. The replacement bridge length, 197-feet, is slightly longer than the existing bridge due to span reconfiguration to position the piers outside of the main channel and the abutments behind the existing abutments. The proposed bridge width matches the existing width of 32-feet toe/toe parapet.

A detour was utilized to maintain traffic throughout construction, however, the bridge was constructed in phases in order to maintain continuous service for the existing Medina County Sewer line attached to the bridge superstructure. The existing sewer line is also supported by the new bridge beams.

The bridge is located within a FEMA Flood Zone AE. A detailed hydraulic analysis and scour evaluation was performed to ensure the replacement bridge does not adversely impact the high water elevation.
