Savage Arena Pedestrian Bridge
University of Toledo | Toledo , Ohio
Osborn was the Engineer of Record for the replacement of the existing Savage Arena Pedestrian Bridge over the Ottawa River. The bridge, located on the main campus of the University of Toledo, is a vital river crossing connecting students, faculty, and visitors from the north parking areas to the John F. Savage Arena. The project involved the complete replacement of the existing 3-span steel thru-girder bridge with a new single span pre-fabricated truss bridge supported on concrete abutments. The new bridge has a clear width of 14-feet and an overall length of approximately 120-feet. The new single span bridge eliminated the need for piers within the waterway, thereby improving hydraulic flow. The new concrete stub abutments are supported on deep foundations. The project also involved replacement of the north and south sidewalk approaches, and removal of an abandoned information booth. Aesthetic enhancements to both approaches were incorporated in the project, along with a new landscaped pedestrian plaza, to provide a welcoming area for people to gather and take in the natural aesthetics of the river. New bridge lighting was installed on the bridge and within the north plaza area. In collaboration with the University and the local park district, a natural tiered kayak launch was designed and constructed as part of this project to provide kayak enthusiasts easy access to the river.
