The OTIC Project No. 71-15.04 involved the rehabilitation of four (4) overhead bridges between MP 122.3 and 145.8 in Erie and Lorain Counties. All structures are 4-span and composed of simple span/continuous/simple span steel beam bridges with concrete decks and concrete substructures.
The first part of this project involved a hands-on inspection of the substructures and existing steel beams that are to remain. The steel beams were inspected for section loss, overall percentage of deteriorated areas, and fatigue prone details. The protective coating was also inspected for peeling paint and deterioration. The concrete substructures were sounded with a hammer to identify any delaminated and spalling areas of concrete to be repaired. The project called for replacement of the existing concrete deck, expansion joints, parapet, and bearings. Coordination with OTIC officials with regards to our inspection schedule for the four (4) bridges was critical in allowing our inspection crew to safely perform the inspection, as well as minimize the disruption to the motoring public on the Turnpike.
