The Midland Lutheran College Events Center, an addition to the existing Hopkins Arena, represents a dynamic hub for campus activity and community involvement. The facility was designed as a new performance venue for collegiate basketball and volleyball, but will convert to a concert, convocation, conference or convention facility and is jointly used by the college, city and private community groups.
Located on a beautiful tree-lined street, the Events Center distinguishes itself from Hopkins by adding color, articulate massing and transparency to welcome fans, visitors and community members to the multitude of events inside.
The 2,000 seat intercollegiate arena includes new locker rooms, a training room, suites, conference rooms, offices, concessions, prep kitchen, restrooms, a Hall of Fame and a lobby. This Event Center lobby was joined to the existing Hopkins Arena entry to create a dynamic multi-purpose space, connecting the old and new facilities. The performance venue floor was purposely-situated 14 feet below-grade to create “top-down” access to the seating and give the space a “big college” effect. Meanwhile, the existing Hopkins Arena was renovated for practice and intramural activities.
The Event Center architecture is complimentary to the existing Arena by matching the red brick and its horizontality. The new facility will feature a translucent clerestory to provide natural light to the interior and a “glow” at night. The clock tower adds a vertical emphasis at the entry and is a symbolic icon for the new complex. The interiors are a rich blend of mid-western hues with splashes of the school colors: orange, black and white.
