The Cleveland Browns have initiated a 2-year $100M+ stadium modernization project that includes state-of-the-art amenities to the 15-year-old facility. The Browns recognized the changing behavior and expectations of the 21st century sports fan. The days of only having provisions for a spectator’s seat and minimalistic video and sound capabilities is no longer adequate when competing for fans' limited entertainment dollars. Instead, NFL franchises must invest in the latest available technology including full Wi-Fi coverage and comprehensive fantasy football league statistics, to name a few. The sports facility must provide for the highest quality video and sound systems, elements of the game that cannot be found at home in front of one’s HD television. As a result, football franchises are integrating multiple segregated seating areas that provide unequaled views of the playing field while allowing the fans to congregate in a social environment.
Osborn was retained to provide the structural and mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services for the first phase of this critical stadium modernization project. The $60M project cost included the installation of two large new video boards behind each end zone. The crystal clear images allow the fans unparalleled access to the players. We provided the design to support the new hi-tech sound system that enhances the spectator’s game day experience. In addition, the mechanical, electrical and plumbing design included the design support of upscale concession spaces leased by Cleveland-area nationally acclaimed chefs. Improvements included the addition of two high-speed escalators to allow fans to access their seating areas as quickly as possible.
Funding a project of this magnitude required that the team partner with local sponsors to offset construction costs. The Browns engaged several prominent companies to create unique seating areas that contribute to making the facility an imposing playing environment for the opposing teams. Improvements included segregated seating areas in each corner of the upper deck. Our structural engineering team collaborated with the project architect to meld the new premium seating areas within the existing structural framing system. The availability of these unique viewing areas creates the opportunity to increase revenue.
